Covered and enclosed riding arenas in Weatherford
An arena is a clear-span building first and a horse facility second. The frame is sized to span the width without interior columns and to the wind load on your stamped drawings; the pad, drainage and footing underneath decide whether it rides well. The National Cutting Horse Association, headquartered in Fort Worth, has funded Texas A&M AgriLife research on how time and use change arena footing, because footing drives both performance and safety (NCHA).
Open-sided, partially enclosed, or enclosed
- Covered (open-sided). Roof and frame only; shade and rain cover, maximum airflow, lowest cost per square foot.
- Partially enclosed. One or more sides closed against prevailing wind and blowing rain; several listed builders describe this option.
- Enclosed. Full walls, doors, lighting, often insulation; a true building for permitting and for the frame design.
The questions that decide an arena project
- Pad. Galvan states it looks at "the pad, the drainage, and the footing" before it quotes; Lucky L offers terrain evaluation and grading and drainage recommendations. Treat a quote that skips the pad as incomplete.
- Footing. Lucky L lists decomposed granite, sand and fiber blends. Footing is usually a separate line or a separate contractor.
- Wind. One listed builder cites 115 mph three-second gust (ASCE 7-16) for Parker County; neither the city nor the county publishes a value on a page we could load. The number on your engineer's stamp governs.
- Lighting and power. By a TDLR-licensed electrician, usually quoted separately.
- Jurisdiction. Unincorporated Parker County issues no building permit; inside Weatherford city limits an accessory structure over 200 square feet needs one, and AG-district structures have a 50-foot height limit. See the permit guide.
