FAQ
Weatherford barn & arena FAQ
Direct answers, checked on the date shown in the footer. Where a figure comes from a specific source, the source is named.
Do I need a permit to build a barn in Parker County, TX?
It depends on the exact address. Parker County states it does not issue building permits or certificates of occupancy and has no zoning in unincorporated areas, but it does permit on-site sewage, floodplain development and driveway culverts, and assigns 911 addresses. Inside Weatherford city limits, an accessory structure over 200 square feet needs a city permit with a site plan (Building Division (817) 598-4284). Willow Park requires a permit for any structure valued over $500.
Does the Texas ag exemption make my barn cheaper?
Not directly. The property-tax side is a special appraisal of qualifying land on its productivity, not of buildings, and Parker County Appraisal District sets acreage minimums (5 acres improved pasture, 10 acres native pasture, a horse as one animal unit on 10 to 12 acres). The sales-tax side, an Ag/Timber number with Form 01-924, exempts stalls, corral panels and troughs but the Comptroller lists materials for general storage barns, sheds and shelters as taxable.
How much does a horse barn cost in Weatherford?
Using only builder-published figures: Kuykendall Contracting in Weatherford lists a small 2 to 3 stall barn at $20,000 to $45,000, a 4 to 6 stall barn with tack room at $40,000 to $85,000, an 8 to 12 stall facility at $70,000 to $150,000 or more, and metal barns at $25 to $55 per square foot installed. Texas Metal Experts lists red-iron barn-and-arena combinations in Parker County at $45 to $85 per square foot. These are ranges and starting points, not quotes.
What does a covered arena cost?
Only one listed builder publishes an arena-size figure: Texas Metal Experts lists an 80 by 200 foot large-operation building from $509,090.91 and barn-and-arena combinations at $45 to $85 per square foot. Pad, drainage, footing, lighting and the wind load on your drawings move the number; every other listed builder quotes arenas only after a site visit.
Post-frame or steel: which is better for Parker County?
Both are built here. Post-frame (Kinney American Barn Co.) embeds posts and screws on a steel skin; steel and red-iron builders (CLA, Texas Metal Experts, Galvan, Miller's, Kuykendall) pour a foundation first and offer clear spans for arenas. Ask each builder how their foundation handles your specific ground, which ranges from sandy to clay to caliche across the county.
How long does a barn build take?
Kuykendall Contracting states build times of typically 2 to 6 weeks once the pad is ready. Engineered drawings, material lead times, any county septic approval (decision within five days of a complete application) and weather sit in front of that.
Are barn builders licensed in Texas?
Texas issues no state license for barn, arena or metal-building construction. Electrical work must be done by a TDLR-licensed electrician and plumbing by a state-licensed plumber. Several listed builders state that their drawings are stamped by a Texas professional engineer; ask for the stamp and a certificate of insurance rather than relying on a licensed-and-insured line on a website.
How does the quote request work, and how many builders will contact me?
You submit your ZIP, structure type, readiness and contact details once. We route qualified Parker County requests to up to 2 listed builders who work your ZIP, named in your confirmation. It is free and carries no obligation.
How are builders in this directory checked, and why is there no ranking?
Every listing is checked by hand against the builder's own website and its BBB profile on the date in the footer. Fields we cannot confirm are marked not stated. No builder in this trade publishes a third-party star rating we could load, so the list is ordered by home base and founding year, and we say so instead of inventing a ranking. Nothing on it is sponsored.
